An Absolute Disgrace
It was absolutely embarrassing for Habs fans to see the citizens of Montreal celebrate the victory of their Canadiens by destroying the city their team represents. Some people wonder what it would be like if the Canadiens manage to win the Stanley Cup this year. Well, I wonder as well: How much of the city will still be left standing (and that's not a compliment)? The Habs should have dispatched the lowest Eastern Conference seed in 4 or 5 games but needed 7 before getting the job done. Not to mention this is just the FIRST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS! Personally, if I was a fan I would have had no energy to smash things because I just would have been glad the team I root for wasn't embarrassed. Anyway, TSN has the best clips of the riot, here it is, runs just under four minutes:
Montreal Riot
I also took the time to watch the Flyers-Capitals game tonight and I felt pretty bad for Ovechkin and company. Their team had so much enthusiasm throughout & battled very hard, and I thought they were the better team tonight, but Philadelphia managed to sneak out a win in OT. On the upside for the Capitals, their future looks very very bright and they will be a contender for many years to come.

I was completely disgusted when I saw this great society we have in North America. Personally I believe they are complete and utter dolts. Individuals of any city that riot for a professional sporting event, whether they win or lose, are complete dirt bags to me. It’s just a sport.
Way to go Montreal great way to start earth day by burning cars, to bad you didn’t have this passion for things that actually mattered.

We shouldn't tar and feather the entire city, though. To be fair, these things usually start with a small group of instigators who aren't even interested in the sport in the first place and just want to cause trouble and feel powerful in a crowd (soccer hooligans in the UK come to mind) and then the drunk or easily persuaded masses get caught up in what's happening and then it spirals out of control.
I think the police should follow Europe's model and do a better job of ID'ing these dirtbags before they go in the building, and they'd have a lot more success if they put up a few more conspicuous security cameras around as well.
Somehow I don't see this ever happening in Ottawa... but then again, the arena's so far out of town, nobody leaves the place on foot. I guess that's a plus for having it outside of the city-centre.

I agree with Stan. Reports did say it was a small few that caused the problem, and it was not only Habs fans, apparently some people who attended a concert were involved. Although in the end this behaviour does not look good for the city.

Agreed hence why I said individuals of any city...but the other reasons for stating way to go MTL is the fact that all the French papers are ignoring it instead of addressing it. This will not help the situation or possible future problems.
Stan not sure what ID'ing you mean as I haven’t heard of this process and don’t know how it works. Just checking their ID? Not sure how that would help? Or am I missing something simple?

The UK has a million cameras in public places and treat it like they do in a casino: watching tape, finding out who the ringleaders are and barring them from entry. They've even experimented with face recognition software, but I think they mostly rely on face-recognizing security people. Heck, there's even an act of parliament there called the Football Spectators Act...
Probably overkill here in Canada, but the police should take a page from the UK and be ready to disperse crowds and channel folks away from the stadium in such a way that the real troublemakers don't have time to organize after the game...
I'm surprised the french papers ignored it though, that's pretty weak.

I didnt't realize it was "1984" over there in the U.K. I have mixed feelings about it to be honest. Like Milhouse once said:
"Sure we have order, but at what price?!"
"Sure we have order, but at what price?!"
The UK has 14.2 MILLION in service right now and funded almost 700 new closed circuit camera initiatives last year alone... Their newest plan is to hook up speakers to some of them and tell people not to litter. Absolutely nuts.
