Now that's what I'm talking about

There's a lot of debate about the ethics of downloading and whether or not an artist/studio should be able to invest money in equipment, talent, marketing, etc. to turn out what can be converted to a computer file that isn't tangible and is accessible to anyone with a PC & internet connection for a profit. What Nine Inch Nails has done, for me, is provide a happy medium that some might say still isn't 100% free so it still sucks, but whatever, I don't mind giving some money to bands I want to support. NIN has released a new album today that is, for the moment, only available for download, and this very big 36-track compilation can be obtained for free. Sort of. What they're offering is the first nine tracks as downloadables off their website for absolutely no charge. That's right, $free.99! Now this is good, because if you don't like what you hear, you didn't waste anything except for a bit of time. And if you want to download the entire 36 track album, they charge a very reasonable $5.00 for it. I can't recall getting what would amount to a double CD for only $5.00: that's a terrific deal.

They are going to release actual CDs next month at a charge of $10 for a double-disc set, which is still a good price considering all the music you get. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a little while as the website currently has too much traffic and had to be shut down so for now, I'll be patient. Once it's up again, I'll enjoy some free music and there's a good chance I'll buy the rest of the tracks, too.

I imagine other bands will start following suit if they haven't already.

SBP,

Radiohead did the same kind of thing with an internet album release. They let people pay what they wanted to pay. Most people paid $0. However when you think of the expenses related to this (very small) it makes sense for them to do this. Even if 5% of fans pay $5 for the album, they are raking in the money.

They also offered a "collector's edition" of the album for $80.

I imagine this will become the wave of the future.

I love this topic.

I think they need to find that balance of offerings. I really like the collector's set idea, it adds value and increases their profit margin to cover production costs. Some people felt Radiohead admitted defeat by releasing InRainbows on CD a few months later, but frankly, I don't see the harm in making it available in all formats that consumers are demanding.

I bought that album, and decided to pay what I would have on iTunes if it were available there. Kind of my support for a band that I think deserves to be compensated for their work.

The record companies' problem is that they need the big sales from established artists to foot the bill for the 10 new artists that flop every year. The companies are hoping that one out of those ten new guys are going to be big enough to continue paying for development of other artists, and so on. It's kinda like a pyramid scheme, and the established guys are threating to topple it by cutting out the studios by releasing their own stuff.

I don't feel sorry for the record companies though, they're the ones who built an industry that relied on high profit margins continuing forever. I don't know any business that projects smooth sailing for the foreseeable future and does absolutely no contingency planning (well, other than suing people).

They basically said "We don't think this Internet thing is going to catch on".

Once the technology and bandwidth were pervasive enough, they were in trouble. The movie business better take note, because bandwidth is almost there for reasonable HD content downloads, and they better be planning the successor to blu-ray in the next 3 years or so.

Sorry had to put this on your site as well incase you ignored it:

True BP let’s just face it my team was on a streak and then Monday night they shit the bed. But I would have to disagree with:
“C'mon Forts, Ottawa has had some bad games, but that takes the cake!”

Was it last year that the Sens were chocking -sorry my fault- ‘fighting’ for the cup, while my Bruins were golfing. And wasn’t it the Sens that were leading the league this year? Not sure, where are your ‘talented’ Sens sitting right now? Hell why don’t I just tell you 5th in the division with 80 points. Hmmm I think that might only be 3 points ahead of my Bruins who have not been considered in contention for quite some time now.

As a Bruins fan in Sensland I am quite happy right now. The Sens are nothing more then a bunch of Nancy-boys and if they could pull their collective head out of their ass they may actually work hard enough to win, oh but that’s right they would have to remove the C from Alfredsson’s jersey as a quitter never wins.

So to sum up your comments:

Ottawa was fighting for the Cup while Boston was golfing. There's nothing left for me to add.

Why do you like being a Bruins fan in Ottawa? There's no media coverage for your team, none of the games are on TV, and despite Ottawa's recent slump they're still behind Ottawa.

See, the reason why Toronto fans have given up on them this year is that they don't have the talent, nor do they have any recent success to show they can battle their way into being a contender. Ottawa on the other hand, does have the talent and past success to pull out of their rut. Boston is neither here nor there. They'll do okay, maybe get out of the first round but that's likely it. They haven't made the playoffs since the lockout and Bruins fans haven't had anything to cheer for since Cam Neely and before that, Bobby Orr. Ownership has been too cheap to keep and sign talent over the years which surprises me that the fans haven't abandonded them for their disinterest in building a winner. I should also point out Boston only started winning after you signed GM Peter Chiarelli, an Ottawa product, and former Senator Zdeno Chara.

Having said all that...see you on the golf course! The Cup is staying out West anyway.

That was my point of why I am a happy Bruins fan in Ottawa, Ottawa should win the cup but can not. I haven't expected the Bruins to win since I was a kid. It is rather pathetic when the 'best' or at least considered one of the best teams in the league (Ottawa) fails to produce a cup with how many chances?

And I agree with you that “GM Peter Chiarelli, an Ottawa product, and former Senator Zdeno Chara” really helped the Bruins but again Ottawa is to pathetic to do anything with Chiarelli or Chara but the Bruins could. And there is at least one Bruins game a week televised in Ottawa not sure what you are talking about there.

All-in-all it really doesn’t matter like you said the cup will be out west -can’t believe you already stated that the Sens won’t win now that’s a true Sens Fan.

I say we have a loser golf challenge -Stan you are invited of course as your leafs’ are teetering on total annihilation. As soon as all our teams are out we go to the links and play 18 holes the rules will be stated in more detail but what I was thinking was something like;

Basic rules apply; closest to the pin wins a round at the 19th hole
Longest drive same thing,
But to make it more interesting on holes such as
11(Alfredsson) BP has to win the hole or drinks a beer
13 (Matts) for Stan has to win the hole or drinks a beer
33 = hole 9 for Chara I have to win the hole or drinks a beer.

I will come up with more, so is this challenge accepted? Tracy is a Sens fan and a great golfer as well so she might be interested if not I have a buddy for a forth as he is a sens fan as well.

Ha! That golf game proposal sounds like a fantastic idea. I think though seeing Tracy is a Sens fan we should play best ball :)

Anyway, I don't think the Sens can win the Cup because of the whole Emery debacle. I thought he could return to his form last year, but after hearing about not just his tardiness, but the fact he doesn't even put in an honest effort at practice, well, how CAN he regain his past form with his laziness? He has killed the team's spirit and cost John Paddock his job. The only hope is Gerber can answer the call, and I guess it's possible but I'm not holding my breath. I sure hope Murray can right this ship, but I'm not so sure he can.

How did I get suckered into this challenge?

"He has killed the team's spirit and cost" I agree, but they have to try and over come that, although it will not be easy at it is similar to wanting to kill your own QB, no one will play for him.

No best ball, as there are no teams. Every sad fan for themselves :)

Sorry Tray, just thought you might like the chance to play for your team if not Pat is a Sens fan if you are not interested.
