The Ultimate Sports Weekend
Perhaps it cannot be labeled "ultimate," but it's pretty darn close. Starting on Saturday, there are many sporting events taking place that will be enjoyed by SBP and I'm looking forward to it. The sweet thing is, the timing on all these events are perfect so it's likely I won't miss anything. Here's the rundown:
- Leave for Montreal @ 10am to go to the Bell Centre. Start by enjoying Baton Rouge for lunch then watch the Habs play the Islanders (okay, the Islanders aren't exactly setting the world on fire, but it's Montreal, the crowd will be great)
- Return to Ottawa approx 7:00pm, to take in the Battle of Ontario, the Ottawa Senators vs Toronto Maple Leafs
- 10pm rolls around, and you got the Ultimate Fighting Championship debut of former WWE star Brock Lesnar against former UFC heaveyweight champ Frank Mir. Lesnar is the underdog, and many say he will get killed getting exposed to "real" fighting. Let me tell you something about Lesnar: he's a former NCAA champion and all-American in amateur wrestling. He's got Royce Gracie training him (HGH and all) and he's just an imposing, massive figure. Now Mir has the experience and that's why he'll be the favourite, but I suspect we'll at least get a good show.
- Of course, Sunday is the Superbowl. Friends, cards, chili, 360, wobbly pops...it's all good!

SBP,
There is no punching in NCAA wrestling. There is no punching in WWE.
I don't think Lesner will actually get killed but he will get "killed" in the sports sense.
How did he pass the steroid screening anyway?
See you Sunday.

After viewing a few UFC bouts, I think it's about 80% grappling and submissions. This is why I think Lesnar will be competitive.
And yeah, I'm sure that body of his is all thighmaster.

I was thinking the same thing RBP, but I am sure Dana White waved the ‘mandatory’ testing in the hopes that Lesnar will be the cash cow that he expects him to be.
The problem with heavy weight divisions the fights are usually boring. The guys can’t swing for more then a minute and when they do end up on the ground both guys are so big that they are stuck in each others guard for so long that they just go until one is tired.
Hence why the best fights with all the action and are fun to watch are the lightweight and welterweight. Boxing is the same way you can either watch to heavy weights slowly wait for the knock-out punch and only through a few punches per round. Or you can watch two muscle stacked 150 to 170 ponders turn each other into raw meat with no stop combinations. But on the upside the UFC heavy weights are starting to condition themselves more and more like their smaller colleagues by increasing stamina and endurance.
Besides all that, the fight between Lesnar and Mir might be interesting as Lesnar is a big dude. And although I have never watched wrestling I know those guys in the WWE at their size can move around a ring really well and he was a real wrestler before the fake stuff. But offence is only half of the fight being able to take a punch is what makes a great fighter. Mir has heavy hands if he connects it will be interesting to see what Lesnar can take. When they go to the ground Mir is a jujitsu champion a far superior art on the ground.
I think the other must watch bouts will be Tibau vs. Griffin, Nakamura vs. Emerson and some of the bigger guys Yundt aka Monster vs. Almedia.

By the way BP did you happen to notice what happen in that game with the sens and bruins last night???
I was watching Lost for the 1st time, lucky me. And I won't likely ever see it again.
BTW...you're right about the slow style of the heavyweights. A George St Pierre fight would be 10x more exciting.

Woof. The Sens lost to the lowly Leafs? C'mon, we needed a loss to get us closer to the basement and a high draft pick. Tell Redden to play better, and that Spezza needs to EARN his money when Dany and Daniel aren't on the ice.
This is Ottawa's rock bottom this season. Hopefully Alfie will be back on Tuesday to shut the Habs fans up and I read Heatley will back on the 9th. There is some light ahead of the tunnel.
