To purchase or not to purchase...

Because a few of you jerks have decided to acquire big televisions (Rob, Dan & Holly, Kim amongst others) it's made me think I need a big television. Sweet sweet big television! Now the model I'm considering is a 52" DLP HDTV made my LG. It's on sale for $1799, ($200 off) and it also comes with a free tv stand valued at $299.

I want your sincere opinion as to whether or not you think I should acquire it. Some things to consider:

a) I'm aware a TV of this size will overtake my condo's living room, but at the same time I don't plan on living in my condo forever
b) I will do one of those 36 month, no financing deals where I make equal monthly payments (I don't have the money to pay for it all at once)
c) This particular model does not have any reviews of it on the web which makes me think it might be a discontinued model
d) I don't plan on getting an extended warrantly, simply because it varies between 20-25% of the purchase price which is quite high
e) It is EnergyStar compliant..tax rebate?

Click on the "Big TV!!!" link to check it out at the Futureshop website, and then click comments to add to me your 2 cents!

Comments:
It is nice. But if you think the TV is going to take over your living space ( I think it will) in your condo, why not buy when you do move? TVs will always exist and they will always be on sale. Besides probably six months after you buy it, you will be conveting another TV.

Okay, I'll come clean: I'm more of a flat-panel LCD-man myself. When you switched it up to the projection, I was less enthusiastic. I know you get a bigger TV for the price, but I think the LCDs just look more crisp.

However, I don't believe in waiting three years or whatever to buy something you want now. At the end of the day, if it's only $20 more a month to get something great now, well... only you can make that decision buddy.

The big question is how much of this is going to cut into your fry-smoking time?????

Hold out for the LCD. Prices are already coming down fast. Projection TV`s will soon be obsolete and you`ll have paid top dollar for the equivalent of those big wooden frame TV`s everyone had in their basement as a kid. Plus the LCD won`t take up nearly as much of your limited space.

Or you could save the money wait till you move get a great TV for half the price and spend $1700 on something fun and worth it as opposed to a TV...

The way I see it, all the "wait til you move" arguments only apply if you're planning on doing that anytime in the near future.

If you do decide to wait, and I'm still hearing about TVs from you in January, your going to have to buy one then, deal?

I gotta go with Rob with the wait till boxing day idea, if you can. I know if you're like me, 2 months is a long time to wait when you want something. And I must disagree with the person who said "spend $1700 on something fun and worth it as opposed to a TV" What is more worth it and fun than that? Look at bens blog for god's sake man (or woman) three out the past 10 blogs are X-Box with a developing trend of more x-box to come. That = TV needed now and of good quality.

Good quality is the subjective point here. I'm voting for LCD. Even if it means 42 inches for 1700. DLP is perfect for the right man in the right house (read: Rob, Dan and Holly) but you sir, require LCD. No matter what you choose today, your new house is at least 2-3 years away right? New house, new TV. If you regret not getting DLP by then, hey, you got a sweet sweet new monitor and a brand new TV to buy.

I'm posting this via my own brand new LCD monitor/TV, 32 inches. Staples 1024 taxes in. Just what the doctor ordered.

All fair opinions. I think I'm leaning towards the LCD. The fact that it's a flat panel is appealing to me, and pretty much what a condo is looking for. If both were the same price I'd take it over DLP...but DLP is still pretty nice. Anyway, will wait til a 42" (minimum size) comes down in price and go from there.
Peace!

Agreed TV’s are fun for Xbox, sports, movies...but why spend money when you already have a good TV that is a good size?

You said “What is more worth it and fun than that?” Please tell me that you are not serious! I could think of a million things more fun then spending 1700 on a TV just to get a crisper image. Or more screen…

BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AGREE - YOU NEED THAT TV!!!!!!!

Costco.ca has a Viewsonic 42" LCD for under $2K...

The things you own end up owning you.

I'll give you $50 for your old one.
/rt.

There is nothing wrong with my TV. It is pure excess to acquire a bigger one. Someone they other day told me they don't even own one. Good for them. I like owning a TV.

So "Commercialism"...what would you do with $1700?

Ok, you say "To each their own", but your jabs aren't so subtle. Your Fight Club rants clearly indicate acquiring material goods is a poor decision, even though the PC you used to type that message is a material good that you've managed to find a use for.

Now I asked you what you would do with $1700. You said that you "...could think of a million things more fun then spending 1700 on a tv". You gave me a list, that outside of travelling, are clearly NOT FUN. Saving it isn't fun. Where is the enjoyment in that? The only enjoyment is knowing you can spend it later on something. Start a constructive hobby? That sounds like something you should suggest to a person who doesn't get out enough or doesn't have any friends.

It seems that you think a TV is somehow a representation of who I am. It's a toy, and nothing more. It's not me. And please don't refer to me as singing, dancing crap.

The Tyler Durden comment was for fun not a direct Jab...I don’t think that you are “singing dancing crap” although humans are the reason the world is in the horrible state that it is in…

Fight club is just a cool movie that wanted to through in the mix. I am not going to take my anti-commercialism advice from Pitt and Norton as they purchase what they want when they want it…

The computer you mention that I am using was purchased out of necessity…

Constructive hobbies were in reference to doing something new not implying that you do nothing…I know that you do many things like poker, ultimate hang out with friends among others…

Now if I was too list fun specific things to do with the money I would reveal my character, which would then reveal who I am, and where would the fun be in that? Although at this point I think that you can figure it out!

"To each their own", I used to say this quite along time ago but didn’t mean it. After a while I realized that many people that were saying it as well were complaining about everyone around them but not realizing that everyone is different. I didn’t want to be that person. So I will speak my mind on my beliefs’ but will always respect someone else’s decisions or wants to a certain point and now truly believe in "to each his own."

Bottom line is don’t take the jabs too serious and TV’s will always get better and better…they will also tend to get cheaper…

my opinion and it still stands from before is if you are going to move and you have a nice and large TV now that is in good working order then why not wait till they are cheaper or that you have the funds for what you want.

And then when you move you have a brand new 40” to 52” plasma, LCD or whatever your heart desires… that is what I am doing at the moment…but as Peter griffin once said
"Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum,
What might be right for you, may not be right for some…"

Now with the comments I have made does this mean that I can’t come over and play x-box on you present TV or your new one for that matter?

Just want to make it clear that, even though they're posting quotes from Fight Club and a liberal number of elipses, it ain't me posting!

Anyone who reads my blog can come over for X-box

Thanks Ben...fast reply by Stan I wonder if he is feeling guilty for his posts'...

Whatever Forts, bring on that sweet, sweet LCD goodness, BP!

Hmmmm, LCD... SBP... that rhymes. Coincidence? I think not.
