Sneaky

I love looking at the hot-off-the-press NHL TV schedule. I subconsciously start planning my fall and winter based on what games will be televised. On the press release, it looks good, 64 out of 82 games broadcasted, and for my Sens more coverage on CBC which is nice as I always felt they were neglected by our national broadcaster.

But, looking over the dates I couldn't help but notice three dreaded letters lined up all in a nice little row: P-P-V. In case you have no clue what that means, it stands for Pay-Per-View. The Sens (and I imagine other NHL teams) are going to experiment with the PPV format and see if they can make some money there, charging anyone who'd like to watch a fee for the privilege. Interesting they didn't mention anywhere on their press release five games will be shown this way, only if you start combing through the schedule do you notice.

As a fan, I'm just cheap. I want them on free TV, and nowhere else. And they picked a couple of games I don't want to miss: Their game vs Detroit, whom they only face twice every three years, and a matchup against the Maple Leafs.

I guess this isn't a huge surprise, every team is looking at new ways to make money...but still, this sucks.

Comments:
Cheap? Anyone who spends a thousand bucks annually on hockey tickets deserves to be able to see the few games you watch on TV for free.

Besides, you'll probably kill the Leafs 7-1 and 8-3 in the first two meetings, so if you *do* order the PPV of their match, just think of it as "cost-per-goal."

You never mentioned how much it cost, or if they'd do the dreaded "package deal", forcing you to watch the Panthers (for Martin AKA Mr. Too Defensive) or Hawks (for Lalime AKA Mr. Not Defensive Enough)

I already have to pay for NHL Centre Ice to see *most* of the Leafs games (and still can't get Leafs TV, but now that Millen's working for them, that's kinda like a blessing.)

Paul: Can we get into an argument about moral values and ticket purchases a little earlier this pre-season?

(there's your shout-out of the day, Patch)

"…every team is looking at new ways to make money...but still, this sucks."
It is so true teams are trying to make more and more money as that is why they exist today; to put out entertainment and get paid handsomely for it for everyone involved from the city to the players…down the line. It is truly sad that those diehard hockey fans who can't afford to spend the money to see a game at the rink might have to miss more games from the comfort of their couch bc they can not afford PPV.
Well I will enjoy my hockey night in Canada until they take it away from me. I really believe that we should be able to see a few more free games on TV, and the games that are not televised that I really want to see I will pay for a ticket before I would pay for it at home. That being said I am sure that when I am done school I will purchase NFL Sunday Ticket and possibly NHL Centre Ice, but PPV to me was for big fights -when boxing was interesting- and movies, not regular season hockey games.

The only plus is that you get Centre Ice when you order Sunday Ticket, so you can watch (most of) your hockey until January at least...

Thanks Stan didn't know that...Well tracy will be happy about the hockey but I think that it will be a hard sell on the Sunday ticket...I guess that will be our alone time...

You should both join a fantasy football league. Easiest way to make EVERY football game important.

Ben says hockey and somehow we're talking about football? I wouldn't even watch football (on TV) if my nuts depended on it let alone a Fantasy pool. I'd spend game time spankin' it just in case, and then instead of checking the stats afterward to see if I lost, well I'd just have to put that to the test..er...spankin' it.

So is this Pay Per View Hockey going to make an effort to duplicate the experience of being at the game by nixing commercials, commentating and showing the intermission shenanigans? Or perhaps a beer line cam or insanely long pisser line cam. how about the 18,500 person 600 meter dash at 01:30:00 of the third cam? Now that I'd pay to see.

Wow..I guess you guys really didn't watch the Western Conference last year. The Flames and Canucks have been doing PPVs since at least last year.

Actually, it's been 3 years (two seasons) that they've done that. Which is why I was wondering if they'd done the package deal, because they'll do that to force you to watch a crap game to get the good ones...

I have no idea how much they are charging or if they force you to do the package deal. These will likely be nights where I visit the local pub to take in the games.

Johnny, nice comment!

Even if you visit the pubs, you'll end up buying a couple drinks and dessert so not only will you be paying MORE than if you'd watched it at home, you'll be getting those unwelcome extra calories!

Who cares about calories when you are out watching the game enjoying pints...

Well, for one thing, it's a Sens game...

Calories count boys. That's why I only drink light beer and watch the Sens in my new cute pink Sens jersey.
