The inevitable has arrived....

OTTAWA SENATORS OFFER 5 GAMES ON PAY-PER-VIEW

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators announced today the club will be offering pay-per-view games this season for the first time in its history.

For only $10.95 a game, or $49.95 for the five-game package, Senators fans can watch their team face the Red Wings in Detroit on Monday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m.; the Rangers in New York City on Tuesday, March 13, at 7 p.m.; the Penguins in Pittsburgh on Sunday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. and the New Jersey Devils in East Rutherford, N.J., on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Somehow, I don't think ticket prices are going to go down as a result.

Comments:
Um, isn't that only 4 games? Did they forget to add the barnburner on November 24?

Okay, for some reason the Sens site has been down since yesterday... I think that just before preseason is an excellent time to bring down the entire website, almost as good an idea as the Arnason, DeVries and Hasek aqusitions.

Anyways, the Citizen claims the other game is Thursday, March 8 at home versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yawn.

They're still going to broadcast 65 of the 77 remaining games, I can't imagine anyone would feel that this isn't enough hockey. Doesn't the law of supply and demand work on buyer interest and relative scarcity of resources? I think 65 games is pretty good.

I suspect this plan will not fly with Sens fans. Unless of course they can guarantee that the Sens'll win all 5 of those games, that it'll be by 6 goals or more, and that they'll be sending free pizza to every subscriber afterwards.

If they capped the PPV games at five it would be ok, but if enough people fork over the dough, we could have a situation like Vancouver where 1/4 of the games are $10.95 a pop. And if PPV is really popular, maybe it will get to a point where every playoff game would be shown that way.

Every sports franchise will maximize revenues by finding the right combination of free and ppv tv. I just don't like the idea of 100% PPV.

I highly doubt this is going to work in this town based on interest, but even if a small number of people buy it, so long as they can beat their revenues from broadcasting a game on A-Channel, they'll keep trying to maximize profit.

I'd be QUITE surprised if they could get it to Vancouver's level in the next few years... Unless of course they win the Cup.

I'm not going to launch into expletives, but *&%^$& them. We pay enough with the Centre Ice package.

Thanks NHL. You improved the game and provided sustained excitment for the first time in decades...

I guess celebrating a great season means the inevitable royal *screw job* for the fans.
* - screw job is a copyright of SBP

I think I'll just give my pennies to the sports package and then cancel it as soon as the NFL season is over.

Go Oilers/Red Wings/Sens/Atlanta Flames

To paraphrase a genius gag from an early episode of the Family Guy:

Oilers suck
Red Wings suck
Sens suck
Atlanta Flames suck

Krypton sucks...

Only those who've seen it will actually get the joke... So, I guess that's Johnny and my brother...

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!

...and Marc, I guess! :)

Yup! :)
