Do you believe Mel?

The talk around the water cooler at work in the last few days revolved around Mel Gibson's drunken tirade last week against Jews. Not just verbally assaulting the police officers who made the arrest, but also going off on tangents saying something along the lines of "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" and asking the officers if they were Jews.

It doesn't help his father is a holocaust denier and Mel hasn't publically denounced his dad for his beliefs. Yesterday, Mel released the following statement. Do you think he is telling the truth and is sincere in his apology? Or is he anti-semitic and just covering his tracks to save his career and reputation?

"There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.

I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out, or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words.

The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God's child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.

I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.

I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed."

Comments:
Rabbi Bulka. Ottawa's numero uno Jewish sage has a radio call in show. Maybe someone should phone in and hear his opinion, I'd be curious to hear it.

613-521-TALK Sunday nights. Apparently he's good buddy's with Dr.Laura Schlensinger, how bout that.

hey, for those of you who folloed the Mentos/Diet Coke thread, check out the new Pepsi and Dry Ice shenaningans on www.skoopy.com. These rich suburbanite kids take softdrink ballistics yet a step further. Nice friggin homes they live in, I guess they got bored x-box long ago.

Well, I unfortunately still have to look at this negatively. It is a little hard to believe that it was “in a moment of insanity” that he made these remarks. I haven’t heard too many people on drunken nights blurting out “The (fill in race or ethnicity here) are responsible for all the wars in the world.” I still believe that Mel would have had to have these thoughts and possible beliefs before this night.

Forts

I'm sure studios have hired this guy knowing he's a racist, but were fine with it since he always had a good public image... You're right, he had a couple of "bowls of loudmouth soup" and his true colours came out. I don't blame anyone for dropping this guy from their production slate.

But, on the bright side, Gibson's P.O.S. film Apocalypto can blame the negative publicity when it TANKS at the box office.

I have not defended Mel since this incident. However, on a more personal note I can say that while intoxicated I have said some pretty stupid things (not racial, but regretful) which I do not believe are a reflection of my values, believes, or indicative of my true character.

Nope, don't buy it. I think there are lines you don't cross, even when intoxicated, and some deep-seated racist belief is pretty much the only way that would come out.

I've said some very stupid things while drunk as well, but never to the point where I blamed a race of people for their involvement in world warfare.

I chose not to know people who would make such comments, drunk or not. I would take that as far as to say, I'm no longer interested in seeing anything that man produces professionally. He can move along. I'm not interested anymore and don't care to hear any more drivel on the subject.
