Aussie Aussie Aussie...OY! OY! OY!
For the first time in 31 years, Australia qualified for the World Cup of Soccer in dramatic fashion against Uruguay. Playing a home & home series, Uruguay took the first game 1-nil, but back in Sydney, Australia the home team took game two, also with a score of 1-nil (I sound like a soccer guy already!). In what was a first in World Cup qualifying history, a decision as to which team would go to Germany in 2006 was decided on penalty kicks. Australia took that result 4-2 in front of 82,000+ elated Socceroo fans. And just to add more to the celebration, John Travolta was in town doing a promotional tour for Qantas. When he came into the players' sight, and impromptu rendition of "You're the one that I want, wooh, ooh, ooh!" quickly followed. How cool is that?! Travolta left the stadium, hair drenched in champagne, remarking it was the best game he had ever seen.
I'm not the biggest soccer fan but I always take the time to watch the World Cup of Soccer. It'll be nice that this time (seeing that I am 1/2 Australian, didn't you know?!) there is a team I really do hope will take it all!
